The Italian on Malta Learning Italian - Not French
Maltese school children are just crazy about Italian, when it comes to their mandatory second language, according to numbers cited by the National Statistics Office.
Approximately one half of all of the total students who were studying a primary foreign language decided to take Italian rather than French, besides English, naturally.
When it comes to the girls, however, the highest preference for the studying of a first foreign language was for French. Another handfull of students chose Russian as their third foreign language. Aside from both Italian and French, roughly 6 per cent of the total number of students would rather take German while another smaller number of students, only 1 per cent chose Spanish. Incredibly, only five students wanted Arabic as their first choice.
The Republic of Malta is an island nation in southern Europe. It consists of an archipelago in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea some 93 km south of Sicily. These strategically located islands have been ruled and fought over by various powers throughout history.
Only the three largest islands Malta Island (Malta), Gozo (Ghawdex), and Comino (Kemmuna) are inhabited. Numerous bays along the indented coastline of the islands provide good harbours, whereas the landscape of the densely populated islands themselves is characterised by low hills with terraced fields. The highest point is the Ta'Dmejrek on Malta Island at 253 m.
The local climate is a Mediterranean temperate clime, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Effectively there are only two seasons, which makes the islands attractive for tourists.
